Saskatchewan OHS convictions coming fast, furious

Province has already obtained more convictions this year than it did last year

Saskatchewan has already obtained more health and safety convictions this year than it did last, after the City of Saskatoon pled guilty to one charge under the province’s occupational health and safety regulations.

The city was fined $10,500 ($7,500 fine plus a $3,000 victim surcharge) for failing to ensure workers were protected from cave-ins of sliding material in a trench.

An additional charge against the city was stayed in court.

The charges arose after an occupational health officer conducted a routine inspection of a worksite in Saskatoon in early September 2008.

This marks the 12th conviction for violations of Saskatchewan's Occupational Health and Safety legislation in 2010-11, compared with a total of 11 in the previous year.

OHS conducts approximately 4,000 worksite inspections annually to ensure standards are known, understood and enforced.
