Saskatoon company celebrates 1 million hours without time loss injury

Steel storage product manufacturer employs an average of 100 people

Saskatoon storage manufacturer Westeel recently celebrated 1 million hours without a time loss injury.

Founded in 1905, Westeel is a manufacturer of steel storage products for the agriculture, petroleum, biofuels and industrial sectors. The company has five manufacturing facilities in Western Canada, including Westeel Saskatoon. The Saskatoon facility, which employs an average 100 people, manufactures grain and fertilizer bins and hopper bottoms.

Westeel Saskatoon has worked 1730 days or 1,076,000 man hours without a loss time injury, according to a news release from the Saskatchewan Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB).

"Saskatoon has definitely set the standard for our company and all the other facilities want to get to where we're at", said Gordon Perrier, Westeel's Western region operations manager.

To keep safety top of mind, Westeel has a safety achievement program where all facilities go through a safety audit each quarter. Scores are based on such criteria as, injury statistics, regular safety meetings and supervisor quotas for safety communications, according to the WCB.

"Communication is important", said Travis Wagar, Saskatoon's health and safety co-ordinator. "These quotas get supervisors on the floor walking and talking safety with their employees, and reinforcing positive behaviours."
