Tracking down Yukon's delinquent employers

Compensation board and Canada Revenue Agency team up to get non-compliant employers

Yukon employers might try to run but they can't hide from the tax man or from the workers' compensation board.

A new agreement between Canada's tax agency and the territory's workers' compensation board will help both agencies track down employers that don't pay taxes or haven't registered with the compensation board.

The agreement allows both organizations to share employer data so they can determine who is not registered with either organization. Once a delinquent employer has been identified, a letter will be mailed urging the employer to register with either agency or face financial penalties.

Currently, about 200 Yukon employers haven't registered their businesses with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and about 500 employers aren't registered with the Yukon Workers' Compensation Health and Safety Board.

Both the Whitehorse and Yukon chambers of commerce were involved in the consultation process when the agreement was being drafted and the province's business community supports the agreement.

The first letters to non-compliant employers are expected to be mailed starting in mid-April.
