WCB Manitoba reports 22 workplace fatalities in 2011, up from 16 in 2010

Annual report highlights include $5 million surplus

Manitoba saw an increase in the number of workplace fatalities in 2011 compared to 2010, according to the Workers Compensation Board of Manitoba’s (WCB) annual report.

There were 22 workplace fatalities in the province in 2011, compared to 16 in 2010. The number of fatalities in 2011 is lower than the number of workplace deaths reported in 2007, 2008 and 2009.

Highlights of the report include a surplus and stable rates.

“In 2011, the WCB achieved an overall surplus of $5 million in spite of weak financial markets," said WCB president and CEO Winston Maharaj. "This was made possible thanks to successful prevention and return to work efforts by the WCB, its partners, and the workers and employers of Manitoba".

As a result of its strong financial position, the WCB was able to maintain the average assessment rate at $1.50 for 2012. The time loss injury rate was maintained at the same rate as 2010 (3.3 per 100 full time workers), the lowest on record for Manitoba, according to the WCB.

"Through our SAFE Work program, we continue to make strides in building a culture of safety and health," said Maharaj.

The WCB launched a redesigned website and introduced an online employer registration request system for new employers and online SAFE Work reports for registered employers in 2011.

The WCB rolled out a new policy on opioid management with guidelines regarding narcotic medication for injured workers.

The WCB completed development on its new location in Brandon, Man., which opened in February 2012.
