Nova Scotia raises minimum wage

Goes up to $8.10 per hour on May 1

on Oct. 1, 2010, Nova Scotians earning minimum wage will make $9.65 per hour, earning more than the low-income cutoff line.

But they won’t have to wait that long for an increase — effective May 1, 2008, the minimum wage rate will rise to $8.10 per hour. And on April 1, 2009, it will increase to $8.60, on April 1, 2010, to $9.20 and on Oct. 1, 2010, it will increase to $9.65. After March 31, 2011, the minimum wage will be adjusted annually based on the consumer price index.

“Increasing minimum wage annually will help improve the lives of more then 20,000 Nova Scotians,” said Mark Parent, Minister of Labour and Workforce Development.

A committee had looked at a formula to determine annual increases in minimum wage to offer more predictability in setting budgets and projections for costs and income. All recommendations were accepted.
