Workplace diversity employment office established

Yukon government wants public service to be representative of its population

The Yukon government has established a workplace diversity employment office in an effort to promote a public service that is representative of the people it serves, according to John Ezerza, the territory’s Public Service Commission Minister.

“The office is the next logical step in promoting diversity in the public service,” said Ezerza.

The territory established the position of representative public service consultant in 1999. It has made that position permanent and is also hiring a new disability employment consultant. The office will also have an administrative support person.

Jon Breen, the executive director of the Yukon Council on disability, said he was pleased the government was establishing the office.

“This initiative responds to the 2003 report, A Framework for Diversity of Staffing (Disability) within the Yukon Government. We look forward to the coming months as the office begins its work.”
