Renewal agreement: Effective Aug. 1, 2021 to July 31, 2028. Signed on Sept. 2, 2021.

Wage adjustments:

Effective Aug. 1, 2021: 5.5%

Effective Aug. 1, 2022: 5.5%

Effective Aug. 1, 2023: 2%

Effective Aug. 1, 2024: 1.5%

Effective Aug. 1, 2025: 1.5%

Effective Aug. 1, 2026: 2%

Effective Aug. 1, 2027: 2%

Shift premium: First mate $75; second mate $28; third mate $20, as officers’ allowance; effective Aug. 1, 2022: Increases of $6.25 for first mate; $5.25 for second mate; $4.75 for third mate (paid for each day worked). $1,000 when employee is in charge of vessel between Tibbets Point and St. Lambert Lock, except when vessel is at anchor or not underway. $250 for piloting officers who are scheduled to pilot waterways (Detroit River, St. Clair River, St. Mary’s River) for at least half passage.

Paid holidays: 12 days.

Vacations with pay: 4% to start, 5% after 1 year, 7% after 5 years, 9% after 10 years, 11% after 15 years.

Overtime: Paid after working 12 hours in 1 day.

Pension: All officers employed will, as condition of employment, enrol and maintain membership in CMSG Retirement Security Plan. Employer will contribute 8%, employee will contribute 8% into plan.

Bereavement leave: 15 days for death of spouse, common-law partner, children. 10 days for death of parents, grandchildren. 5 days for death of siblings, parents-in-law, grandparents.

Seniority – recall rights: When employee has been laid off because of lack of work for period equal to seniority or 24 months, whichever is less. 24 months when employee is off because of sickness, accident, employer-approved leaves or any other legitimate reason. 24 months when employee is permanently promoted to captain (contracted captain).

Probationary period: 90 cumulative working days.

Discipline: Sunset clause is 24 months for disciplinary information.

Safety shoes: $250 (previously $150) on Dec. 1 of each year, after 1 year of service. Should employee damage safety boots beyond repair in course of duties, employee will be reimbursed up to $200.

Uniforms/clothing: Employer will provide 1 pair of coveralls to each new employee when employee commences employment on vessel; 2 additional pairs of coveralls during first 12 months of employment. Subsequently, coveralls are replaced as needed, maximum 3 pairs of coveralls per year, 1 of which will be insulated if ship is trading in Canada. Employee will have option to select winter parka or rain gear instead of insulated coveralls.

Mileage: $0.46 per kilometre.

Sample rates of hourly pay (current, after 15.4% increase):

First-mate: $40.18 rising 6 steps to $46.35

Second-mate: $36.39 rising 6 steps to $41.98

Third-mate: $34.27 rising 6 steps to $39.51

Editor’s notes: Excess baggage: If employee travels with all their belongings following assignment, employer will reimburse employee maximum $20 for each extra baggage charge that is incurred, maximum 12 times per year; maximum $40 towards extra or oversized baggage fees for officers who do not take all their belongings with them at end of assignment. Meals, lodging: Maximum allowable rate for meals is $25 per meal (previously $18 per meal), alcohol is not reimbursable; maximum allowable rate for lodging is $150 per room, per night (previously $110 per room, per night). Legal defense insurance: Employer will pay $5 per position, per day (previously $2.25 per position, per day) to union. Marine disaster: Any employee who suffers loss of personal effects, clothing, navigational equipment and tools related to operation of tug through wreck or marine disaster or while in transit provided or paid for by employer to or from home port, will be compensated by payment of maximum $3,500.
