Renewal agreement: Effective Jan. 1, 2021 to Dec. 31, 2023. Signed on Feb. 1, 2021.
Shift premium: Employee will be paid at new level, minimum 4 hours, when employee does work of another level than is higher than employee’s rate. $1 per hour to be paid while working from swinging stage, bosun’s chair, climbing without staging, when 30 feet or higher above ground (does not apply to working from ladder).
Paid holidays: 12 days, including Nova Scotia Heritage Day, Easter Monday, Halifax Natal Day.
Vacations with pay: 3 weeks (120 hours) or 6% after 3 years, 4 weeks (160 hours) or 8% after 10 years, 5 weeks (200 hours) or 10% after 10 years, 6 weeks (240 hours) or 12% after 10 years.
Overtime: Time and one-half for work after 8 hours per day. Double for work between midnight and 8 a.m. (employee called for midnight start will be guaranteed minimum 8 hours of pay at premium rate). Double time for work on Saturday, except for hours worked between 8 a.m. and noon and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. to receiving from railcars or for all elevator work not paid for by others, which will be paid at time and one-half. Double time for work on Sunday. Double time for certain start-up work at grain elevator required between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. Time may be banked and taken as time off in lieu, maximum 80 hours.
Meal allowance: $15 (previously $10) for employee who works 3 or more hours of overtime immediately before or after regularly scheduled hours of work and who was not advised on previous day by posting of overtime notice.
Medical benefits: Employer pays 50% of premiums, employee pays 50% of premiums for Blue Cross plan.
Sick leave: 1.25 days (10 hours) per month.
Bereavement leave: 4 days for death in immediate family (father, mother, brother, sister, spouse, child of employee, father-in-law, mother-in-law, relative residing in employee’s household). 1 day for death of grandparent, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law (must be day of funeral).
Discipline: Sunset clause is 12 consecutive months for employee who is out of employer’s service.
Severance: 2 weeks’ pay for first year of employment; 1 week’s pay for each succeeding year of employment, maximum 28 weeks’ pay for first layoff; 1 week’s pay for each succeeding year of employment, maximum 28 weeks’ pay, for second and subsequent layoffs.
Safety shoes: $260 per year (previously $240 per year), to be paid in 2 installments (February and August).
Uniforms/clothing: Employer will supply 2 pairs of coveralls to employees that will be laundered on weekly basis at employer’s cost.

Editor’s notes: Resignation: Employee who has 10 years of employment will be paid severance pay on resignation equal to amount obtained by multiplying half of weekly rate of pay on resignation by number of years of employment, maximum 26 weeks’ pay, less any severance pay, retiring leave or cash gratuity in lieu of retiring leave by employer. Special leave: Employee will earn special leave credits, maximum 12 days at rate of 1 half-day for each month worked.
