Tentative deal at Casino Belleville
BELLEVILLE, Ont. — Employees working at Shorelines Casino in Belleville, Ont. reached a new tentative agreement on Oct. 26.
Unifor, Local 1090 members at Shorelines Belleville rejected the employer’s most recent offer by 84 per cent on Oct. 20, and went on strike just after midnight on Oct. 22, says the union.
“The employer tried to test their determination but our members stayed strong and succeeded in winning important gains,” says Jerry Dias, Unifor national president.
The union represents 93 workers at the casino in table games, slots, food and beverage, kitchen and culinary, facilities and housekeeping, guest services, and cashiering.
Newfoundland and Labrador town workers ratify contract
GRAND FALLS-WINDSOR, N.L. — Members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), Local 1349, voted in favour of ratifying a new collective agreement with the town of Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland and Labrador on Oct. 24.
The collective agreement is effective retroactively from Jan. 2 and runs until Dec. 31, 2025. The deal includes wage increases, a signing bonus, as well as improvements to call-in language that will allow greater work-life balance for casual workers, says the union.
The union also proposed a new “rate stabilization fund” that will ensure accountability, affordability and transparency for the health benefits plan, which the town agreed to, says CUPE.
The collective agreement must also be ratified by the employer, says CUPE.
Second request filed for Amazon certification
CALGARY — Teamsters, Local 987 filed an application for certification on Oct. 19 to represent workers at Amazon’s fulfillment centre, located near the Calgary airport.
The Alberta Labour Relations Board (ALRB) will consider the application for certification and will decide at a later date if a vote should be held to determine whether these workers will be represented by Teamsters, says the union.
This is the second application for certification among Amazon workers in Alberta. On Sept. 13, Teamsters Local 362 applied to the ALRB for certification at Amazon’s warehouse in Nisku and is waiting for the decision, says Teamsters.
“People at Amazon tell us that job security, the pace of work, discrimination and favouritism are major issues for them,” says François Laporte, Teamsters Canada president. “We have the resources and the ability to put a stop to those injustices, and that’s why these workers have opted for the Teamsters.”
Teamsters, Local 987 has filed one unfair labour practice complaint with the ALRB related to Amazon’s inappropriate use of security guards since the Teamsters began their organizing campaign, says the union.
New contract signed at Inglasco in Quebec
SHERBROOKE, Que. — At a ratification meeting on Oct. 12, members of Inglasco, Local 922, in Sherbrooke, Que. unanimously accepted a new three-year collective agreement.
The three-year contract includes wages, vacations and multi-skilling of members, says the union.
Highlights of the new contract include salary increases over three years, bonus improvements, and the addition of a fifth week of paid vacation for workers with more than 17 years of seniority, says the union.
Inglasco makes print promotional material and the 24 employees print official NHL, AHL and ECHL pucks.
