Montreal Metro employees reach contract
MONTREAL — The United Food and Commercial Workers union (UFCW), Local 500 members working at Metro Plus Sorel-Tracy in Montreal ratified a new seven-year agreement on March 2.
The agreement will see salaries increase by two per cent each year, in addition to a two per cent increase to their Christmas bonuses in each year of the contract, says the union.
The contract also sees a supervisor premium of $0.75 per hour while securing 13 new regular positions and improving group insurance to allow for increased member savings, says UFCW.
Toronto community centre workers sign deal
TORONTO — A tentative agreement was reached on March 1 between the City of Toronto and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), Local 2998, who represents more than 250 community centre workers.
The deal follows other City of Toronto bargaining patterns and includes wage improvements, improvements to maternity leave benefits and layoff notice and the introduction of two paid sick days for part-time employees, says the union.
The CUPE, 2998 centres specialize in supporting populations most often marginalized, including: LGBTQ2S+ communities, new Canadians, the elderly, low-income parents, at-risk youth, people with disabilities, Black, Indigenous and people of colour.
Sisley Honda workers ratify contract
TORONTO — Members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), Local 235 at Sisley Honda in Toronto ratified a new agreement on Feb. 25.
Highlights include wage increases, increases to the DB pension plan, increases to the technician training bonus, improved scheduling with hours of rest between shifts and a reduced sunset clause on discipline, says the union.
Yee Hong Centre employees join OPSEU
TORONTO — Home support workers at The Yee Hong Centre for Geriatric Care residences in Toronto voted to join the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) on Feb. 24.
“Home support workers like our newest members have proven themselves time and again as some of the most heroic people on the front lines of the pandemic,” says Warren (Smokey) Thomas, OPSEU president .
The employees will now be able to address problems such as the employer’s reluctance to replace workers who’ve called in sick, leaving those still working with unsustainable and even dangerously high workloads, says the union.
The workers provide culturally appropriate services to seniors, many of whom are Chinese, says OPSEU.
New deal at Manitoba racing body
WINNIPEG — The Manitoba Horse Racing Commission (MHRC) ratified a new two-year agreement on Feb. 22 with the Manitoba Government and General Employees’ Union (MGEU), Local 146 .
The new contract includes a salary schedule memorandum of agreement that will provide for wage increases matching those which may be achieved for the civil service, says the union.
Given the government’s previous decision to abolish the MHRC and roll all responsibilities into the Liquor and Gaming Commission, the agreement also includes devolution and transfer-of-service provisions, says MGEU.
