Renewal agreement: Effective Jan. 1, 2020 to Dec. 31, 2021. Ratified on Feb. 5, 2020. Signed on March 4, 2020.

Shift premium: Rate of pay equivalent to that which employee would be entitled if occupying that position when, as result of absence of incumbent, employee is appointed for more than 1 consecutive workday to temporarily take  on responsibility and duties of position that has higher pay category than that of employee. $160 per month for journeyman tradesman with extra ticket that is separate and distinct and related to employee’s work. $0.09 included in mechanic, heavy-duty hourly rate in recognition of requirement that journeyman mechanics are required by employer to obtain commercial vehicle inspection license. $100 per month for November, December, January, February, March for grader operators using own power for plug-ins. $0.30 per hour for all hours worked during shift in which majority of hours, excluding overtime, fall between 6 p.m. and 8 a.m.

Paid holidays: 12 days.

Vacations with pay: 15 days after 1 year, 20 days after 5 years, 25 years after 12 years, 30 days after 20 years.

Overtime: Time and one-half for all work after 8 hours per day or 40 hours per week. May be taken as time off in lieu but if time off is not taken within 6-month period, banked time will be paid out.

Meal allowance: Second meal break of one-half hour with pay, provided work continues after meal break when employee works more than 10 consecutive hours in any 1 day.

Medical benefits: Employer pays 85% of premiums, employee pays 15% of premiums for Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan. Employer will pay $1.70 per hour (previously $1.50 per hour) for each hour worked by each employee into Operating Engineers Local 955 Health and Wellness Trust Fund. Effective Jan. 1, 2021: $1.75 per hour.

Sick leave: 0.5 days per month. Unused entitlement may be accumulated, maximum 90 days.

Pension: All eligible employees will participate in Local Authorities Pension Plan or successor plans.

Bereavement leave: 3 days for death in immediate family (current spouse, child, parent, legal guardian, brother, brother-in-law, sister, sister-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, stepmother, stepfather, stepchildren, parent of spouse, grandparent, grandchild, relative who is member of employee’s household). 2 additional days for travel time, if required. 1 day to attend funeral after death of close friend or of relative who is not immediate family. Employee may be given up to 2 days with pay to perform tasks associated with being executor of estate.

Seniority – recall rights: 12 consecutive months for layoffs; 2 years for being absent from work for any other reason.

Call-in pay: Minimum 3 hours at overtime rate plus travel allowance at prevailing county rate from and to employee’s residence for distance travelled in employee’s private vehicle. 1 hour of pay, at applicable overtime rate, for any water and wastewater employee who performs work but is not required to travel to worksite. Time may be paid out of banked.

Probationary period: 90 days worked.

Discipline: Sunset clause is 36 months for any written documents pertaining to disciplinary action or dismissal.

Tool allowance: $700 per year (previously $650 per year) for journeyman mechanics, others required by employer to provide substantial amount of own tools (payment split and paid in June and December).

Mileage: Travel allowance at prevailing county rate for distance travelled within county to, from, and between, specific construction projects for road-construction employees who provide own transportation.

Editor’s notes: Medical certificates: Employer will be responsible for costs of medical forms that it requires employee to provide related to sick-leave benefits. Accumulated sick leave: Upon full retirement, between 55 and 64 years old inclusive, employee will be entitled to be paid out 25% of remaining accumulated sick leave (for employees hired before Jan. 1, 2016). Seniority bonus: $0.05 per hour for each year of service after 3 years, maximum $0.70 per hour, for years of service for all public works and surveyor employees who were employed as of May 2, 1994; all other employees who qualify for seniority bonus will receive additional $0.05 per hour and continue to receive additional $0.05 each subsequent year, maximum $0.60 per hour.
