Renewal agreement: Effective March 1, 2024 to Feb. 28, 2027. Signed on Nov. 2, 2023.
Wage adjustments:
Effective March 1, 2025: Cost of living wage increase to be negotiated June 1, 2025
Effective March 1, 2026: Cost of living wage increase to be negotiated June 1, 2026
Paid holidays: 9 days. Boxing Day and August civic holiday are traditionally unpaid non-working days. If obligated to work such days, employees will be paid straight-time.
Overtime: Time and one-half for work after 8 hours per day or 44 hours per week. May be banked and taken as time off in lieu, maximum 1 year.
Medical benefits: Merit Contractors’ Association health and welfare plan.
Pension: Employer will contribute minimum $1.50 per hour (previously $1 per hour) for each straight-time hour (including any hours in bank-hour system) worked by certified sheet metal mechanics, maximum 44 hours per week, into employer’s RRSP after 2288 hours of employment. For all other classifications, employer will contribute percentage of $1.50 per hour (previously $1 per hour) equal to percentage of certified sheet metal mechanic wage paid for each straight-time hour (including any hours in bank-hour system), maximum 44 hours per week.
Probationary period: 3 months.
Safety shoes: $250 per year (previously $200 per year) tool repair and boot allowance, after probation.
Sample rates of hourly pay (current):
Certified sheet-metal mechanics: $34
Sheet-metal mechanics: 80% of minimum certified sheet metal mechanic rate
Apprentices
During first 1,800 hours of employment as registered apprentice and until first years apprentice schooling is successfully completed: 50% of certified sheet metal mechanic rate
During first 1,800 hours of employment immediately following completion of requirements and until second years apprentice schooling is successfully completed: 65% of certified sheet metal mechanic rate
During 1,800 hours of employment immediately following completion of requirements and until third-year apprentice schooling is successfully completed: 75% of certified sheet metal mechanic rate
During 1,800 hours of employment immediately following completion of requirements and until receiving certificate of qualification as certified sheet metal mechanic from department of advanced education: 85% of certified sheet metal mechanic rate
Machine operator no. 1: 60% of minimum certified sheet metal mechanic rate
Machine operator no. 2: 50% of minimum certified sheet metal mechanic rate
Machine operator no. 3: 40% of minimum certified sheet metal mechanic rate
Support worker: 30% of minimum certified sheet metal mechanic rate
Certified sheet metal welders: 90% of minimum certified sheet metal mechanic rate
Editor’s notes: Accommodation, room and board: $155 per day every employee is responsible to find both room and board. If accommodation is provided by employer, $55-per-day meal allowance will be provided to employee or mutually agreed room and board or camp accommodation, available seven days per week.
