Renewal agreement: Effective Sept. 1, 2019 to Aug. 31, 2022. Ratified in April 2020. Signed on Feb. 20, 2020.
Wage adjustments:
Effective Sept. 1, 2019: 1%
Effective Sept. 1, 2020: 1%
Effective Sept. 1, 2021: 1%
Paid holidays: 10 days.
Sick leave: Up to 6 paid hours per semester of appointment. Applies only to regularly scheduled classroom or laboratory contact hours. Long-term sick leave without pay will be given with medical evidence of such need.
Bereavement leave: Paid leave up to employee’s average weekly contracted hours for that semester for death of spouse, same-sex partner, child, child-in-law, stepchild, ward, sibling, parent. Where extended travel is needed, up to 1.5 times average weekly contract hours. Paid leave up to one-half of employee’s average weekly contracted hours for that semester for death of stepparent, foster-parent, grandchild, grandparent, parent-in-law, child-in-law, sibling-in-law. Where extended travel is needed, up to three-quarters of average weekly contract hours.
Probationary period: 1 semester of employment. May be extended for second semester if employee isn’t able to meet performance expectations but holds promise of being able to with such extension.
Discipline: Sunset clause is 2 terms of employment (excluding term in which disciplinary letter was issued) or 12-month period, whichever is shorter, for disciplinary warning letters.
Sample rates of hourly pay (current, after 1% increase):
TA/RA without bachelor's degree: $22.56 rising 1 step to $22.79
TA/RA with bachelor's degree: $35.31 rising 1 step to $35.66
TA/RA with master's degree: $39.23 rising 1 step to $39.63
Exam invigilators: $15.30 rising 1 step to $15.45
Chief invigilators: $20.40 rising 1 step to $20.61
Editor’s notes: Hours of work: Full TAship/RAship will not exceed average of 10 working hours per week, normally over 2 semesters, for total of 280 hours per year. Employee who is not student may be hired for more than average of 10 hours per week. Full-time graduate students cannot work more than 255 hours in any 1 semester and no more than 510 hours in any 12-month period. Full-time undergraduate students cannot work more than 160 hours in any semester when they are registered for 3 or more courses. No employee will be required to work more than 8 hours per day with exception of field trips. Social justice fund: Employer will contribute $0.01 per hour worked to Public Service Alliance of Canada’s Social Justice Fund. Supplemental training allowance: $150 to each employee in each semester that employee works as either TA or RA.
