Renewal agreement: Effective March 24, 2019 to March 23, 2023. Ratified in June 2019. Signed on Nov. 12, 2019.

Wage adjustments:

Effective March 24, 2020: 2.5%

Effective March 24, 2021: 2%

Effective March 24, 2022: 2%

Shift premium: $0.15 for all hours worked between 7 p.m. and 3 a.m. For drivers, $0.05 per mile when operating double hook-up equipment and $0.02 per mile for triple hook-up equipment. $0.50 per hour for lead-hands.

Paid holidays: 12 days, plus 1 floating holiday.

Vacations with pay: Legislative minimum to start, 2 weeks after 1 year, 3 weeks after 5 years, 4 weeks after 10 years, 5 weeks after 18 years, 6 weeks after 25 years.

Overtime: Time and one-half for all hours in excess of 8 per day or 40 per week. Time and one-half for hours worked on statutory holiday. Hourly employees paid 8 hours at regular rate. Drivers who work combination of miles and hours in week of holiday will be paid 10 hours at regular rate.

Meal allowance: $18 per sleep for drivers required to layover and sleep away from home. $16 for each day for drivers held over at foreign terminals on Sundays or general holidays.

Medical benefits: Employer will contribute $448 per month to local union health and welfare plan. Effective Jan. 1, 2021: $453 per month. Effective Jan. 1, 2022: $458 per month. Employer pays 100% of premiums for Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP).

Sick leave: Company can request doctor’s note (at its expense) after 3 consecutive days absent.

Pension: Employer will contribute $610 per month to Teamsters and Motor Transport Industrial Relations Bureau of Ontario Pension Plan. Effective Jan. 1, 2021: $615 per month. Effective Jan. 1, 2022: $620 per month.

Bereavement leave: Up to 5 days off (3 paid) for death of parent, spouse, child, sibling, grandparent, grandchild, stepparents, parent-in-law, sibling-in-law. If more time is required for any reason relating to death, leave of absence will be given.

Seniority – recall rights: 12 months for layoffs; 24 months if employee is laid off and not recalled for period extending beyond length of his service at time of lay off or beyond 24 consecutive working months, whichever is lessor, or if such employee requests and is paid any statutory termination benefits, whichever comes first.

Call-in pay: Minimum 9 hours’ work or pay at regular rate for highway department employees. Minimum 8 hours’ work or pay at regular rate for city drivers called in for extra highway trips. Minimum 4 hours at time and one-half for all Saturday work.

Probationary period: 60 calendar days.

Discipline: Sunset clause is 2 years.

Severance: In event of terminal closure with no work moved, 3 weeks’ notice or pay in lieu plus severance pay of 5 days per full year of service.

Safety shoes: Maximum $125 per year (previously $115 per year) for CSA-approved safety shoes. 1 pair per year whenever required by employer, government agency, customers.

Uniforms/clothing: Employer will provide and pay for uniforms where required. Employer will supply individual lockers for all employees in dock department and any other employees required to work in dock department for more than 2 hours per shift. Employer will provide all necessary equipment, clothing, goggles to protect employees handling hazardous material, green hides, lampblack and pigment. Employees requested to work in terminal yard in inclement weather will be provided with protective rainwear. Drivers, shunters, dock men will be provided with 2 pairs of work gloves per year.

Mileage: Drivers on highway operations: $0.5429 per mile rising 2 steps to $0.5649 per mile (2 and 3 axles), $0.5451 per mile rising 2 steps to $0.5671 (4, 5 and 6 axles), 0.5471 per mile rising 2 steps to $0.5692 per mile (7 axels and up). $4 per mile less for first 12 months of employment, $2 per mile less for second 12 months of employment.

Sample rates of hourly pay (current, after 4% increase):

Drivers: $25.39 rising 2 steps to $26.42

Checkers: $25.38 rising 2 steps to $26.41

Dock men: $25.28 rising 2 steps to $26.31

Casuals: $20.19 rising 2 steps to $21

($2 per hour less than above rates for first 12 months of employment; $1 per hour less for second 12 months.)

Editor’s notes: Supervisory promotions: Employees promoted to supervisor positions not in bargaining unit will retain seniority for 180 calendar days. Notice of closure: Employer must give at least 60 days’ written notice to union of terminal closure or transfer of work to another terminal. Adequate supplies: All power units will have adequate heaters, windshield wipers and washers, air conditioners and defrosters. Driver’s licence: Employees requiring driver’s licence for work reimbursed maximum $128 for medical fees for required driving licence medical exams (Effective March 24, 2022: $138). Holdovers: No driver will be held over away from home terminal on general holiday or on Sunday. Employer will cover cost of moving for any employee transferred at its request. Away-from-home medicals: If employer elects to have employee examined in another city which is not adjacent to employee’s home community, employee will be supplied transportation to and from city and be paid at regular hourly rate for time involved. Mileage limitations: At home terminals, highway drivers will have right to decline further work when they have accumulated 45 hours or 1,800 miles in any week. No driver will be dispatched from home terminal when driver has accumulated 2,200 miles in 1 week. When driver at foreign terminal has reached 2,200 miles in 1 week, driver must be dispatched on trip directly en route to home terminal. Plug-in outlets: In areas generally referred to as Northern Ontario (including Barrie and Midland), employer will supply electrical plug-in outlets for all employees’ cars while on duty. Any new terminals in Peterborough, Lindsay, Ottawa, Pembroke areas will also have facilities supplied.
