P.E.I. to increase minimum wage

The minimum wage in Prince Edward Island will be $13.70 per hour effective April 1, 2022.

This marks a 70-cent increase from the current rate of $13 per hour and is a significant improvement from the 15-cent increase that took effect this year.

The new wage rate will be higher than all current minimum wage rates across Atlantic Canada. Currently, New Brunswick is at $11.75 while Nova Scotia’s is $12.95 and Newfoundland and Labrador’s is $12.75.

However, the NDP in Nova Scotia have announced they plan to introduce legislation in the spring that would raise the rate to $15 per hour.

In July, Ottawa officially approved a $15-per-hour federal minimum wage for workers in the federally regulated private sector starting Dec. 29, 2021.

Ontario is also set to have a minimum wage of $15 per hour starting Jan. 1, 2022.
