Spokesperson cites ‘ongoing transformation’ behind layoffs
Editor's note: Story updated 2:30 pm EST on April 16 with response from UKG
Employees at Ultimate Kronos Group (UKG) are facing sweeping job cuts by the HR and workforce management giant in a global restructuring.
The development will see roughly 950 positions eliminated as part of the company's "ongoing transformation."
This adds up to six per cent of UKG's workforce, says Domenic Locapo, senior director of global public relations at UKG.
"These actions span multiple functions and regions and reflect rapidly evolving market shifts — including changes in technology driven by AI, customer expectations and how software companies compete — and will better align our structure, skills and investments for the future."
The company is "continually balancing competing investments" to enhance its market position and evaluate how it operates and aligns teams to support customers, Locapo said in a statement.
"We are committed to providing impacted employees with care, dignity and comprehensive transition resources, while continuing to serve our customers with the mission‑critical solutions they rely on."
950 roles eliminated
Reddit user Vindictives9688 posted an internal note said to be from UKG about the restructuring that cited the “difficult news." Notifications were reportedly be sent out by email on April 15.
The memo purported to be from UKG says close to 600 employees leaving immediately while roughly 350 “will be asked to remain with UKG for a defined transition period to ensure continuity for our customers and partners as we evolve our operations and service model.”
Staff were also told to avoid the office as notifications roll out, according to the memo posted on Reddit: “As we prepare to support each other with care, empathy, and respect, please plan to work from home tomorrow.”
“Stunning-rough-4969” on Reddit disclosed he received an email about being laid off on April 15.
“I’ve been with this company for just under 3 years and this will be the 4th layoff they’ve done in that time. The first was butchered and people found out when they got their return packages in the mail prior to being notified... so I guess this beats that?”
Wave of layoffs at UKG
Back in 2024, UKG laid off 14% of its workforce, equating to about 2,200 of its 15,000 global employees.
UKG was created in 2020 through the combination of two major players in the HR and workforce technology space: Kronos, known for time clocks and scheduling systems, and Ultimate Software, a leading provider of HR and payroll solutions. The merged entity has since operated under the UKG banner, supplying software and services to employers around the world.
