Construction equipment focus of Ontario safety blitz

Ministry of Labour inspectors targeting construction sites in June and July

In an attempt to make construction sites safer, Ontario is focusing on hazards related to the operation and maintenance of equipment and the handling of materials.

Ministry of Labour inspectors have announced plans to visit construction workplaces during heightened enforcement activity in June and July. They will look specifically at the:

•operation and maintenance of construction equipment

•training and supervision of workers using the equipment and those working nearby.

Last year, five of 16 construction site worker fatalities in Ontario resulted from direct contact with construction equipment or the material the equipment was moving. Between Jan. 1, 2005, and Dec. 31, 2008, 34 Ontario workers died after being struck by construction equipment or by the material they were handling with that equipment.
