Manitoba kicks off road safety campaign

Targeted at motorists during construction season

Manitoba’s annual SAFE Roads campaign is underway.

The campaign is a joint initiative between 12 partners to raise awareness of the safety of workers on Manitoba’s roads, reminding drivers to slow down when driving past road constructions sites and sharing the road with emergency vehicles.

“For many Manitoban construction and emergency workers, our roads are their offices,” said Nancy Allan, minister of education on behalf of labour and immigration minister Jennifer Howard. “As we head into the summer months, we need to respect their workplaces by slowing down and being aware of what’s going on in construction zones.”

The Highway Traffic Act sets additional penalties for failing to slow down in construction zones. Speeders will have an additional five dollars added to the base fine for every kilometer recorded over the speed limit.
