Ontario targets construction sites in enforcement blitz

Inspectors focusing on access equipment in August

Ministry of Labour inspectors are targeting construction sites across Ontario in August.

Starting Aug. 1, an enforcement blitz will focus on hazards involving access equipment used to allow workers access to various locations at construction projects.

Between 2003 and 2008, 24 construction workers in Ontario died from falls that involved access equipment, according to figures from the ministry.

The Ministry of Labour said the blitz will check on:

•worker training on access equipment

•safe use, inspection and testing of access equipment

•maintenance records and other documentation

•rescue and emergency procedures

•other hazards

“Hazards involving improper use of access equipment can lead to catastrophic events, including injuries and death,” said Minister of Labour Charles Sousa. “Workers have a right to return home each day, safe and sound.”
