Charges filed in farm accident
Health and safety charges have been laid against the owners and operators of a mushroom farm in Langley, B.C., where three workers died two years ago. The workers were allegedly killed by toxic gases while working in a confined space. Farms should be aware health and safety inspections have doubled since the accident, and mushroom farm inspections take place every six months.
Public consulted on accessibility
Newfoundland and Labrador is consulting with the public about a strategy for the inclusion of people with disabilities. (See discussion paper at www.hrle.gov.nl.ca/hrle/ disabilities/consultations.html.) The strategy will probably involve measures to foster employment opportunities for people with disabilities.
proposed standards for accessibility
Ontario has released proposed requirements under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005. Some of these will require employers to: deliver accessibility awareness training; accommodate disabilities while recruiting; develop individual accommodation plans; and develop return-to-work procedures for employees who miss work due to a non-workplace injury or illness. Comments are welcome until Oct. 16. For more details, see www.mcss.gov.on.ca.
