Environics tops Best Workplaces list

Great Place to Work Institute also created six special categories for employers

Environics Communications, a public relations firm in Toronto, is the best place to work in Canada, according to the Great Place to Work Institute.

The institute surveyed more than 40,000 employees, using the Trust Index survey, to compile the 2010 Best Workplaces in Canada list of 75 companies, ranging in size from 56 to over 50,000 employees.

The Great Place to Work model is based on the concept that a great workplace is measured by the quality of three interconnected relationships within the work environment: the relationship between employees and management; the relationship between employees and their jobs or organization; and the relationship between employees and co-workers.

Environics topped the list this year by successfully creating a high-trust work environment where managers are credible and employees feel respected, proud of their work and connected to their colleagues.

"We are honoured to be recognized as the number one workplace in Canada by the Great Place to Work Institute, particularly because of the strong voice given to employees in their selection process," says Bruce MacLellan, president of Environics.

"A trusting and supportive workplace is deeply engrained in our firm and is a major competitive edge in our success in serving our clients."

All companies on the list have shown trust is the foundation for quality jobs and performance excellence, stated the institute in a release. And over the past 11 years, companies on the United States version of the list have outperformed standard stock market indices by a factor of two to three, according to a study by Russell Investment Group.

In addition to the list, the institute also selected award winners in six special categories:

• Best Workplace for Women: SAS Institute

• Credibility (how employees see their managers): General Mills Canada

• Respect (My manager respects me as an individual): NetApp Canada

• Fairness (The rules of the game): Precision BioLogic

• Pride (I have pride in what I do): S.C. Johnson and Son

• Camaraderie (I enjoy the people that I work with): Devon Canada
