Ontario passes controversial budget containing health-care premiums for most residents, employers to deduct premium from paycheques

Employers will start deducting Ontario’s new health premium from workers’ paycheques on July 1 after the provincial government passed the budget bill into law late on June 17.

The budget bill bringing in the new health premiums was passed 52-23. The Liberal government dismissed opposition calls for more debate and public hearings on the budget.

“I don’t think further debate is going to change our mind on this,” said Finance Minister Greg Sorbara in a Toronto Star article. “There are many urgent things that we have to proceed with… we inherited financial circumstances that require us to raise additional revenue and to put very tight expenditure controls over all ministries over the course of the next four years.”
