Layoffs lead to violence in India

Workers charged in HR vice-president's death

Workers in India have been charged in the beating death of a human resources vice-president at an auto parts manufacturing company.

Four or five workers barged into Roy George's office at Pricol, an auto parts company in Coimbatore in southern India, after George had laid off 42 workers, said a police superintendant.

The workers then beat him with iron rods, he said. George, 47, later died from his head injuries.

Police have arrested 12 people.

Last year, more than 63 former workers were charged with murder in connection with the beating death of the CEO of Graziano Trasmissioni India, an Italian auto parts manufacturer in New Delhi. The CEO was attacked after 200 employees were dismissed.
