Minimum wage to hit $10 by 2010

Newfoundland and Labrador unveils plan to boost wage in four increments over two years

Newfoundland and Labrador is planning to raise its minimum wage from its current level of $8 per hour to $10 per hour by 2010.

Over the next two years, the minimum wage will increase four times by 50 cents per hour:

•$8.50 (Jan. 1, 2009);

•$9 (July 1, 2009);

•$9.50 (Jan. 1, 2010); and

•$10 (July 1, 2010).

“This government is committed to developing a plan to achieve the increases to minimum wage in a predictable and incremental manner,” said Shawn Skinner, the province’s Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment. “The increase in the minimum wage is one part of an overall balanced approach of improving earned income levels for low wage workers while supporting tax measures that improve the competitiveness of business.”
