Edmonton — An arbitrator has awarded teachers working in Alberta’s public, separate and francophone schools a 5.99-per-cent increase in pay, a figure that matched the average increase in weekly earnings of Albertans from 2008 to 2009. The Alberta Teachers’ Association and the province signed an agreement that contained a formula linking salary increases with annual changes in the average weekly earnings, but questions arose after Statistics Canada changed its formula.

Alberta minimum wage to stay put

Edmonton — Alberta is leaving its minimum wage at $8.80 an hour in 2010, a move the province says will help people in entry-level positions keep working and help small businesses remain viable. In 2007, the province linked its minimum wage to Alberta’s average weekly earnings, but said it plans to review that policy.
