Social media useful job hunt tool: Study

Canadians also using it to research companies' culture

Social media is an effective job search tool, according to a report by Randstad Canada.

Sixty-one per cent of the 400 Canadian survey respondents know social media is an effective job search tool, such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, compared to 83 per cent of respondents in China and 82 per cent of respondents in India, according to the study which surveyed workers in a variety of countries.  

Fifty-one per cent of Canadian respondents use social media to prepare for job interviews, 53 per cent use it to find information about a company’s culture and 51 per cent wouldn’t apply for a position at a company with negative information about it on social media site, found the study.

While 77 per cent of  Canadian respondents have social media accounts, only 27 per cent use it for business or work-related purposes, found the study. Seventy-eight per cent of workers in India and 63 per cent in China use it for professional purposes,
