Pension changes in Manitoba
Legislation changing pension laws in Manitoba will come into force on May 31. The Pension Benefits Amendment Act had been awaiting proclamation for almost five years. A table outlining the changes is available at www.gov.mb.ca/ labour/pension/bulletins/ bulletin1.pdf. These include provisions for phased retirement, pension committees and the division of a pension upon the breakdown of a relationship.
2010 pay equity deadline in Quebec
Recent amendments to the Pay Equity Act in Quebec give employers until Dec. 31, 2010, to make any necessary pay equity adjustments, paid with interest from Nov. 21, 2001. Quebec employers with 10 to 49 workers must ensure employees in predominantly female job classes receive the same compensation for work of equal value. Those with more than 100 employees must set up a pay equity committee to allow workers to participate in the creation of the pay equity plan. Employers that already have a pay equity plan must complete an audit of the plan by the end of the year
N.W.T. updates apprenticeship act
A new Apprenticeship, Trade and Occupation Certification Act is before the Northwest Territories Assembly. The statute provides a framework for the certification of apprentices in designated trades and trainees in designated occupations. Most of the differences between the old and new statutes would be minor, but maximum fines for contravention of the apprenticeship legislation would increase from $500 to $2,000.
