Changes to foreign worker program
Ottawa — Major changes to Canada’s Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TWP), meant to strengthen protection for temporary foreign workers, take effect on April 1. Under the new regulations, temporary foreign workers can only stay in Canada for up to four years and then can’t return for another four years. The changes also include a potential two-year ban for employers that pay foreign workers less than promised or provide sub-standard working conditions. All employment offers will be evaluated to determine how genuine they are as part of the Labour Market Opinion (LMO) process and each LMO will only be valid for six months.
