CUPE, City of Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures, Que., sign collective agreements

New deals in effect for seven years

Two Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) locals signed their new collective agreements Feb. 28, with City of Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures, Que., Mayor Sylvain Juneau and city manager Robert Doré in attendance.

CUPE 4795 — representing public works blue-collar workers — and CUPE 2621 — representing recreation supervisors — renewed their respective collective agreements, which had expired on Dec. 31, 2015, said the union.

The new collective agreements with the City of Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures, Que., will be in effect for seven years, according to CUPE.

“By signing onto an industrial peace for such a lengthy period, employees of both locals have agreed to give city administrators the necessary tools to redress the financial situation, without having to worry about labour contracts,” said Benoit Gosselin, CUPE union representative.

“The negotiations were held in an atmosphere of transparency and direct and frank exchange. We have demonstrated that there is absolutely no need for the Couillard government’s Bill 24 (Bill 110) regulating collective bargaining in the municipal sector,” said Gosselin.

CUPE represents about 70 per cent of all municipal employees in Quebec, totalling 31,600 members.
