First contract for employees of IGA Cantley in Quebec

Sick leave, new floating holiday included in new deal: UFCW

Workers at the IGA grocery store in Cantley, Que., ratified their first collective agreement on Jan. 15.

Under the new three-year contract, the employer will contribute to the UFCW Quebec Dental Plan and cover 80 per cent of dental expenses of the workers, who are represented by United Food and Commercial Workers Canada (UFCW), Local 500.

The agreement also provides sick leave for regular employees, a floating holiday for all workers and premiums for check-out supervisors. As well, workers at the top of the wage scale will enjoy a two per cent wage increase, said the union.

“The retail food sector is going through major changes right now,” said Antonio Filato, president UFCW Canada, Local 500. “However, by joining an international union that has long-standing expertise in the grocery industry, the IGA Cantley members are now in a much stronger position, and we are very proud of this first collective agreement.”
