Join local union with about 300 members
About 37 workers from the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria (AGGV) joined the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) after a labour relations board vote on Nov. 30.
“Our members are a very diverse group who proudly provide library services to the citizens of and visitors to the Greater Victoria area,” said Helen Hughes, CUPE 410 president. “As cultural workers providing the public access to cultural and recreational resources, they are a good fit with our local.”
The workers at the AGGV provide curatorial services, exhibit design and preparation, gallery programming for visitors and members, as well as front desk services. They also manage the gallery shop and the art rental and sales program, coordinate membership and donor services, and also provide marketing and development, accounting, IT, security and custodial services.
CUPE 410 represents workers at the Greater Victoria Public Library including pages, circulation assistants (clerks), librarians, and branch supervisors to shuttle drivers, IT specialists, services and program coordinators. Including workers from AGGV, the union now represents almost 300 workers.
