Helsinki airport service staff begin strike

Flights not affected by walkout

HELSINKI (Reuters) — Helsinki airport service workers started on Friday a strike that may delay Norwegian Air Shuttle's flights, after Finnish trade unions and business representatives failed to resolve a pay dispute, airport operator Finavia said.

The strike will likely expand on Monday, Finnish National Conciliator Minna Helle said.

"Differences of opinions are so great that there are no conditions for finding a solution at the moment... The situation is very serious," she said in a statement.

No-one at Norwegian Air could immediately be reached for comment.

Finnish flag carrier Finnair said the strike would not directly affect its flights, but that it would slow security controls at the airport.

Finavia data showed small delays but a spokesman said he was not able to say whether they were due to the strike, nor how many workers had gone on strike.

No strike action is planned over the weekend, but Finnish aviation employees' trade union IAU has prepared action for a larger group on Monday and Friday next week.

The negotiations are due to continue on Tuesday.
