Hospitality workers at two Stella’s cafes in Winnipeg, are the newest members of United Food and Commercial Workers union (UFCW) Canada, Local 832 after voting to join the union on Jan. 4.

Stella’s is a local chain of cafes that serves baked breads, soups, jams, and sandwiches for dine-in or take-away.

The almost 100 restaurant employees work as servers, dishwashers, cooks, hosts, and baristas at the Stella’s locations on Sherbrook and Osborne streets in Winnipeg. Workers at the Osborne café joined the union to address harassment, inappropriate behaviour and other long-standing issues in the workplace, while employees at the Sherbrook location voted yes, said the union.

“The credit for the Osborne organizing drive goes entirely to the employees at Stella’s, and those who started the Not My Stella’s campaign,” said Jeff Traeger, UFCW Canada, Local 832 president, about the worker-led social media campaign that shined a light on labour practices at the Osborne location, said the union.

UFCW Canada, Local 832 is Manitoba’s largest private sector union, representing over 18,000 members in a wide variety of industries, including the retail food, health care, food processing, security, industrial, textile, and transportations sectors.
