New contract for health care workers at Ontario’s Valley Manor long-term care facility

Deal includes pension, benefits, vacation improvments

A new collective agreement at Valley Manor in Barry's Bay, Ont., will improve stability and guarantee wages and working conditions through to 2019, when redevelopment of the facility is expected to be completed, said the union.

The agreement — ratified by members of the United Steelworkers union (USW) — provides for improvements in the workers' pension, benefits and vacation, according to the union.

"We are happy to have negotiated an agreement that is equal to or greater than what would have been achieved through interest arbitration," said Marty Warren, USW Ontario director. "We are confident that improvements in wages and working conditions through the construction period will benefit our members, the residents and the community of Barry's Bay."

Valley Manor is currently a 90-bed facility in the town of Barry's Bay, 200 kilometres west of Ottawa. The 90 members of USW Local 6946 provide health care, housekeeping and dietary services.
