Technosub workers in Rouyn-Noranda, Que., unanimously ratify first contract

Raises in each year of new deal

Workers at submersible pump manufacturer Technosub in Rouyn-Noranda, Que., on March 27 voted 100 per cent in favour of their first collective agreement, said the union.

“Seniority will be respected, gains protected and workers will all receive increases and move up through the wage scale, reaching the highest level of the salary scale much more quickly than before,” said Benoit Locas, United Steelworkers (USW) staff representative. “In the first year, increases will range between 3.2 per cent and four per cent.”

About 70 workers at Technosub — which supplies equipment to mining companies — chose to unionize with the USW, and obtained certification on May 26, 2016.

Workers will receive salary increases of 2.5 per cent in the second and third years of the contract, and these increases will apply to all workers. Vacation pay has also been increased, as well as the employer’s contributions to the group RRSP. Provisions for floating holidays and sick leave have also been improved, according to USW.
