Workers at the plant that supplied the Avro Arrow project back in the 1950s ratified a new collective agreement on March 27 with Magellan Aerospace in Haley, Ont.

Members of United Steelworkers (USW), Local 4820 approved a new collective agreement that guarantees improvements in seniority, health and safety, scheduling, along with a boost in the workers' pension plan and wage increases averaging 5.5 per cent over three years, said the union.

"This company has invested in advanced manufacturing techniques and clearly shows an interest in remaining competitive in the aerospace industry," said Marty Warren, USW Ontario director. "Investing in its Haley workforce with a decent contract is part of that commitment."

The new agreement also includes a profit-sharing plan: If the company's profit targets are reached within a year, a one per cent bonus will be added to annual salaries, according to USW.

The union also negotiated language that recognizes the impact of mental health and domestic violence on the workplace. As well, contributions to the Steelworkers Humanity Fund — the union's international development and relief organization — were part of the agreement, said the union.
