Company fined $70,000 for payroll failures

Brampton, Ont., business owed seven employees $43,346

Failure to settle payroll issues with seven former employees has cost a Brampton business $70,000.

Handed down in Brampton court Oct. 11, NE Group of Companies, 1533633 Ontario Inc., was convicted on seven counts of failure to comply with orders to pay amounting to $43,346.

The business provides merchant terminals used for payments by customers.

The company failed to comply with orders issued last summer by a Ministry of Labour employment standards officer requiring payment of wages to seven employees.

The wages owed vary from about $3,000 to over $10,000 for each employee. None of the amounts have been paid.

Following a trial, Justice Richard Quon convicted the company on seven counts and imposed the fine in Brampton court.

In addition to the fine the court imposed a 25 per cent victim fine surcharge as required by the Provincial Offences Act. The surcharge is credited to a special provincial government fund to assist victims of crime.
