Students turn the lens onto workplace safety in WorkSafeBC contest

High school students from across British Columbia put the focus on workplace safety by producing videos in WorkSafeBC’s sixth annual video contest.

This year, there were 42 submissions involving 145 students from 19 schools. The theme was, “Overexposed! What you may not see can kill you.” The idea was to focus on hidden occupational exposures that can be deadly.

“We chose this theme because we need to dispel the perception that exposure-related illnesses, like some forms of cancer, are strictly old-person diseases,” said Trudi Rondou, WorkSafeBC manager of new and young workers.

The videos were judged on their impact, transferable safety message, original creative concept and technical execution. They were also judged on how well they provided a youth perspective on workplace safety, and how well the safety messages targeted young workers and their peer groups.

And the winners are…

The first place team in each category won $500 to share and their schools each receive $2,000. The second place teams each win $500 to share and $1,500 for the schools and the honourable mention team receives $500 to share.
