What is knowledge management?

Knowledge management is an attempt to systemize the identification and collection of essential knowledge within an organization so it can be used more widely to help organizational effectiveness. It is not about creating vast databases, it’s a business concept that might use technology to capture its collective intelligence. But it could also rely on other methods such as written research and project files.

Cloud computing on horizon

The Privacy Commissioner of Canada is conducting a public consultation about cloud computing. Cloud computing services β€” such as online file storage, social networking sites and webmail β€” use hardware and software managed by third parties located on remote computers. Proponents say it gives businesses low-cost access to these resources but critics are concerned about potential privacy risks. Submissions can be made to the Privacy Commissioner until April 15, 2010.  See www.priv.gc.ca/media/nr-c/2010/nr-c_100211_e.cfm for more details.

Stay interviews – retention tool

The most positive and proactive approach to finding out what employees want is to ask them while they are still with your organization. Stay interviews are a great tool to chart progress on relationships, development, the work, the work environment and how things are going in general. This can be easily done as part of the performance review process. Stay interviews allow managers and HR professionals to discover what is happening in their work environment and correct any potential issues.
