North Dakota bank helps staff play Santa

Employees get up to $1,000 to help the needy

A bank in North Dakota is helping employees give back during the holiday season.

Fargo-based State Bank & Trust is giving full-time employees $1,000 each and part-time employees $500 each to help people in need as part of the bank's $502,000, Oprah-inspired "Pay it Forward" initiative.

The bank's more than 500 employees can choose an individual cause, pool their money for a larger project or collaborate with others outside the bank. They were also told to document each good deed with a video camera — which the employees get to keep.

The only conditions are that employees aren't allowed to use the money for themselves, their families or other bank employees.

In the past, the bank has divided up five per cent of company earnings among employees at the holidays.
