Serve yourself with self service info (Web sight)

The move from a paper-driven system to electronic employee self service has brought huge advantages to HR professionals by eliminating much of the mundane, time-consuming and often redundant paperwork that traditionally came along with the job. The following sites explore the phenomenon of employee self service, and how it could revolutionize HR.

More time for strategy

This white paper from Delphi Consultants provides an overview of employee self service by first examining how HR processes were handled traditionally. For the most part, this meant paper forms, and lots of them. Hiring forms, change of address forms, the addition of a spouse to the benefit plan form, among countless others. The employee first had to fill out the paper forms, then these forms were entered into the system, creating process redundancy. Not to mention the process took days to complete, instead of the minutes it takes for the employee to submit them electronically. The author suggests that by eliminating these administrative details, “the resulting increase in productivity gives HR freedom to focus on more strategic issues.”

This portion of ADP’s Web site, dedicated to employee self service, offers an overview of employee self service, as well as an outline of some of its benefits. These sections are accessible from links to the right side of the screen. Once inside either of these sections, there is a list of links on the left of the screen that further detail specific aspects of self service, including electronic forms and workflow, manager information access and customization.

After intranets, portals

This comprehensive white paper from Forbes Technology Group discusses using portal technology to make HR processes more efficient. The paper discusses the general benefits resulting from employee self service, breaks down the two types of HR information that can be delivered via self service, and explains how Web portals are an ideal successor to corporate intranets for HR administrative functions. The authors comment on Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server, as well as Ingeniasoft HRMS software, and identify how they can be of assistance in creating and managing an employee self service system.

Instant measurements

An article on this site presents a simple, concise checklist of the benefits of employee self service. Aside from the usual advantages, the author makes a good case by pointing out that it can “help measure the effectiveness of HR processes and communications. For example, when you post a critical announcement, you can immediately determine how widely read it becomes.”
