Workers at Masterfeeds in Edmonton ratify new contract

Deal includes increases of at least two per cent in each year: UFCW

Employees working at Masterfeeds in Edmonton overwhelmingly ratified a new three-year collective agreement on Jan. 30.

The Masterfeeds Edmonton plant is an animal feed mill serving Northern Alberta’s farming community and is represented by United Food and Commercial Workers Canada (UFCW), Local 401

Highlights of the new agreement include annual wage increases of two per cent, two per cent and 2.25 per cent respectively in each year of the agreement, improvements to premium rates, boot allowances and bereavement leave, and the introduction of a direct pay prescription drug card, said the union.

“There’s a lot to be proud of in this agreement, both in terms of process and outcome,” said Michael Hughes, UFCW 401 negotiator. “Our members were seeking a balance between modest increases in wages and benefits, and improvements in their voice and visibility in the workplace.”

Workers will also benefit from improved language on members’ representational rights, the introduction of a sunset-clause for discipline, as well as a dignity and respect clause and integration of statutory leaves of absences.
