United Food and Commercial Workers union (UFCW) Canada, Local 175 members at the Metro Bayridge Road supermarket in Kingston, Ont. ratified a new collective agreement on Oct. 19.

Some of the gains and improvements include better scheduling language for full-time employees that provides them a regular day off during the week when feasible and now evening shifts will be scheduled to 10 p.m., instead of 10:30 p.m., says the union.

As well the deal includes provisions that group 2 employees can be scheduled three evening shifts per week, only to a maximum of three weeks in a row. Every fourth week, it may only have a maximum of two evening shifts for those workers, says UFCW.

Group 2 employees will also receive a two-day weekend once every five weeks, all employees working between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. will receive the night-shift premium now, full-time employees are now guaranteed an eight-hour shift when working a statutory holiday and there were a number of monetary improvements, including higher end rates for part-time employees in the agreement, says the union.

The contract covers more than 70 employees at the store.
